The research that I have conducted on acid mine drainage (to be referred to as AMD throughout the contents) has been to investigate the effects of AMD on the environment with a more definite focus on the effects that AMD has on plant life. The aim of this research is to determine the impact that AMD has on the environment.
The hypothesis of my research is that AMD retards growth of plants and is damaging to the environment.
Further research on the effects of heavy metals and radiation have on the environment including soil, plants, water and human health will …show more content…
They have artificially constructed a Syngonium podophyllum-Aspergillus niger combinate system which absorbs uranium and keeps it in the form of phosphate uranyl and carboxylic uranyl.
South Africa at the moment is using a “recycling” system in which acid mine water is used to break down sludge. They are yet to come up with a viable treatment system and do not make any mentions about the danger that its citizens are in.
Conclusion:
It is apparent that acid-mine drainage is an extremely hazardous but unknown danger.
It will affect all organisms and it needs to be dealt with before it gets out of control.
More needs to done to inform the public of the dangers of AMD and the government also needs to take action.
The information I have gathered is limited to foreign countries but still applicable to this task and the points that it addresses.
