The first symbol, which is used throughout the book, is the signal fire. The boys start the fire on the mountain to attract nearby ships to their rescue. The fact that the boys continue to maintain the fire shows that they want to be saved and return to society. Golding uses kids with their innocents and the struggle to survive to see which comes through, good or evil, civilization or savagery. The outcome may be drastic but it is realistic. I hope my picture helps bring to light the point he is trying to lay across. With symbolism he created a story that can be translated into the faults within our world and the communities within it. He shows how even the most innocent school boys can turn into savages, just by using the mandates and expectations of society. He is saying that the way we are living will not continue to work. Our world will turn into that island and civilization may turn to savagery. Let us hope for the ship to save
