The christmas tree is used to symbolize Nora. Nora uses the tree and decorations as an excuse for her husband to give her money when really she is just saving up to pay back her debt. The tree also represents Nora in that she is viewed as nothing more than a possession; something pretty that can be decorated. Just as a tree makes a house look good, as his wife, Noraś beauty helps earn Torvald respect and a good reputation.
The macaroons symbolize Nora’s unhappiness. Nora follows her husband's rules and is obedient in everything except being told not to eat macaroons. This shows that she may be hiding her resentment at not being able to make her own decisions so she breaks a rule that she can hid.

The Helmer assume that because they will have more money after New Years, they can buy more items and will become happier. However they soon find out that the promotion is what ultimately causes them to split up. Money and debt also represents Nora's past and her fear that her crime will be discovered.
Nora talks about miracles when thinking about her husband opening the letter. The miracles represent how her life is going to change and that if she wants it to change for the better, than she must take action herself.
The story is face paced because in only three acts and in the story, only about two days goes by. The author accomplishes the face pace through his use of drama and lots of dialogue.
The author wrote A Doll House to show social and psychological problems found in life. It demonstrates the importance of things like money, and social class. It also portrays what marriage and gender roles were like in this time period. Part of which includes women's rights. His story also brings to light the struggle of love in marriage. Finally it is also possible that the story is based on an event that happened in the author's
