What Does It Mean To Do Good

Decent Essays
In a world where the negative is on constant display, and the positive is increasingly undermined for its counterpart, its easy for many to look past what it truly means to do good for the people around you. In addition, many believe that these positives, these acts of good, need to be large and on display for the people around them - as if they are doing it as an act of personal gain. This attitude is completely botched, for the greatest, most lasting, and most rewarding act any individual can do is the little things, the things that leave you, and the person you helped, with a smile on their face and warmth in their heart. There is no limit to the amount of kindness that one can spread, and it could be anything from smiling at someone who

It was a rainy Saturday night. I left my dorm, my stomach empty because I’d been trying to wait out the rain before going to find something to eat. But the rain didn’t end, and although it was quite late, I decided to make a quick trip to the store nearby rather than wait any longer. My umbrella was broken, so I put on my hoodie and tried to run as fast as possible. About halfway to the store, I saw an old woman with a folding walker, trying to get past the intersection while holding her umbrella.…

My mom and I were at the dollar store and the carts have a pole so you can’t take them out of the store, when walking outside the door I noticed a lady trying to get the cart out the door so I went back knowing the cart had to stay inside and I asked if she would like help with carrying her things to the car. As I helped the lady with her items she thanked me numerous times and was very grateful. This made me feel like I was a good person for helping her because if I just let her struggle to get her things to the car I wouldn’t have been able to stop regretting it. This kind deed made me want to do more kind deeds for people, looking for nothing in return but the gratefulness of them.…

This week I had a chance to volunteer in my church, as a Sunday school teacher. It involved me making crafts that were based on bible viruses, storytelling and the deflect part of it all I had to teach/preach to the kids. During that time, they were majority of factors that I did not enjoy, such as teaching a large group of kids that looked up to me for guidance and just working with kids have always been a challenge for me. Despite of all the negativity that I felt at the moment, after the services some of the parents came and thanked me for teaching their kids. Some kids gave me hugs/ kisses when they left the church, having to see the smile on their faces made me happy and grateful that I took some time out of my busy schedule to make a difference.…

Grandpa did not always lecture good things; he himself practiced all of them and set an example for others. During childhood, community work had always felt, as a sheer waste of time and that, and that people should not work for welfare of others. Grandpa Oscar said that, “A person will always live forever known for his/her deeds and not for his/her richness.” These words stuck from that day onwards; now, sunshine rolls through curtains immense satisfaction, while helping others and long to do so. One sunny day, while doing community service at church, one sign in particular said that, “It is only by giving, does one…

In Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologiae article one and two, he demonstrates the concepts of: goodness in human actions, man’s objective of happiness, and how a human’s good action contributes to partaking in God. The Aquinas’ main argument is simply that what actions make it good or bad. In first article begins with the question regarding if our actions we as humans are good. The answer that Aquinas provides is a yes due to that every act of a man does is good and evil does not come from the virtue of good.…

Helping others is a blessing everyone has the opportunity to do. One never knows how much a person is in need of help or how frightened they are to ask for it. We don’t know what a person has gone through. Starvation, coldness, anguish, depression, anxiety, humiliation, panic, distress, or the feeling of the defeat are some feelings they go through. Many don’t appreciate or even acknowledge how auspicious they are to have the extravagances of having a roof over their heads, or nutrition.…

“Freedom is the power, rooted in reason and will, to act or not to act, to do this or that, and so to perform deliberate actions on one’s own responsibility. Human freedom is a force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection when directed toward God (CCC, 1731). St. Thomas Aquinas supports this claim by stating that man’s natural inclinations to goodness, happiness, being, and truth are the very source of his freedom (Christian Ethics, pg. 245). By choosing what is good and just, which is God, man becomes more free. But when man goes against his natural inclinations to goodness, happiness, being, and truth, he abuses his gift of freedom that God has given to him and man ultimately becomes a slave to sin.…

Four years ago, my life took a path I had not imagined. I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and help indigenous Mayans in some of the most poverty stricken regions. Now this may sound like an ordinary service trip to travel internationally and give charity to a stranger and feel good about yourself, but the experience was much more. Yes, I built stoves in homes, handed out water filters, food, chickens, and participated in eye clinics; but the immersion and interaction within their culture proved to be life changing, even despite a complicated language barrier. Like most children, I had many aspirations of future career possibilities such as an engineer or astronomer while growing up.…

The google definition of a mean person is someone who wants to see others fail.. But as for Mts. Jones, in the short story of “ Thank You M’am” by Langston Hughes, when she almost got robbed of her purse by a young boy named Rodger. She didn't take him the police, to get him in trouble and put in jail, instead she took him into her own home and took care of him and fed him like he was her own son. Many people might think Mrs. Jones is the opposite of caring for how she treated him in the beginning, but I think caring, and generous, and considerate is the best way to describe her as.…

Although I am not in the worst financial situation, I am not necessary in a great one either. My family considers ourselves as a lower middle class family. This financial situation has caused us to be very careful about how money is spent and saved. This dictation of money has led me to volunteer as I feel that no one should be excluded from any activity simply because money is an issue. I feel that the quality of the person is more important than the amount of money that they have.…

He was ridiculed for being poor and not having enough money to buy new things, but every day these two people would smile at him. When we are kind to others not only do the people we are being nice to get benefits, we do as well. In the article, “The Science of Good Deeds” the author says, “When we engage in good deeds, we reduce our own stress -- including the physiological changes that occur when we're stressed.” This quote really shows how being altruistic can impact people and you. When we are nice to people not only do they feel good, but, as the quote says, we also have different changes like reducing our stress and the physiological changes that come with it. Also, in the article, “Teaching Kindness” the author says, “Children with a positive outlook have greater attention spans, more willingness to learn, and better creative thinking to improve results at school.”…

For my selfless act, I really wanted to help someone homeless. I didn’t want to give them money, who knows what they could spend it on, but food; that could save them for another 3 days. On the way to a beach, I saw a homeless man on the side of the ramp to get off of the highway. He was sitting on the floor holding a sign that said “homeless veteran”. Purpose Of Work Ethic

One October night around closing time, as I was sweeping the lobby of the Dunkin’ Donuts where I work, an older woman stopped me and said: “I’ve been watching you for a while, and you know how to clean. You’ve got a great work ethic; that’s rare these days.” You see, when I don my ugly brown work hat over my fabulously voluminous 80s-esque ‘do, most people don’t give me the time of day. So I appreciated the acknowledgement. But for the rest of the night, I couldn’t stop contemplating why I kept sweeping the floor from corner to corner to nook to cranny, day after day, without any such acknowledgment, when it always ended up the same exact way: a mess.…
