We just need the time and patience to discover our self-identity. We need to recall the boldness of youth and conquer the resistance against ourselves. To be brave enough to stray away form the norm is to be misunderstood by the bell curve of society. The vast majority may find it strange and distasteful but it is only because the vast majority is too timid to tear away from the support. One may feel apprehensive and uncomfortable to move along an unconventional path, just like how Waldo must not certainly feel most at ease in a sweater at the beach.…

Normal is a complicated word despite literally meaning ordinary and regular. Within a social perspective, normal is always changing and being redefined. However, as the definition evolves, there will be individuals who do not fit within the designated parameters, also known as the nonconformists. This struggle, between those who want to fit in and have a society filled with people just like them versus those who just want to be themselves, is at the center of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. By portraying the perspective of the patients on the ward and highlighting the brutality against men who are supposedly insane, but really are just uniquely human, Kesey accentuates the dangers within the doctrine of conformity-…

I like the quote "Expect to be called a stand patter, but don’t be a stand patter. Expect to be called a demagogue, but don’t be a demagogue," in the speech given by Calvin Coolidge at Massachusetts. It might have a different meaning but to me, it means not to be what people call us. This is a common problem in the world today. We live by what people call us; our every steps and breaths are determined by people.…

Touching the Holy One of the main themes of this book is to understand that God love us unconditionally, and no matter where we find ourselves, God 's love for us is unchangeable, His love for us is not based on our merit, it is based on His goodness. Robert Wicks helped this reader to appreciate his own ordinariness, it is our lack of trust in His love that keeps us from approaching our loving and caring God; our self doubts, our negative thought, the pressure to be extraordinary are the things that keep us from receiving the love of God, the author emphasize the importance of having self-esteem, and he also help his reader to understand and accept their ordinariness. The author helps the readers to understand that failure to accept our ordinariness is cause by pride, people who are dependent on God, they have the ability to simply be themselves, with all their failures and to simply be themselves. They don 't value themselves above others, but they also don 't depreciate themselves and what they have to offer.…

It is a thought that can bring about excitement and joy, or even anxiety and fear. Most would define “being called” as a specific individual’s direct revelation from God of their future occupation. This is, however, simply incorrect.…

There is a thin line between normal and abnormal. Normality is completely relative to the society in which one exists. Each culture has its own definition of average and each person is expected to live up to that definition. When someone does not meet that expectation, they are often ostracized from the group and labeled an outcast, or even a monster. Although the “monster” itself faces many struggles throughout life, the family of the “monster” is often left conflicted between fitting in with society and supporting their loved one.…

Being in a church setting, I did not want to break many norms, or be overly intolerable because I knew that many people would be very upset. From breaking the norms (sitting down while everyone else stood up to sing, texting, ect.) the people got upset, but not upset enough to leave the service. I think if I would have continuously been disruptive and annoying, people would have left, or told me to leave. I thought that it was very interesting that while they sing, they stand up, while at my church (Baptist) we don’t stand for every song we sing.…
