What Does It Mean To Be Civilized?

I think that what it means to be civilized is defined by more than one source. It was ingrained in the culture I grew up; therefore, in myself as well. Now, when I analyze it, a lot of kids’ media I grew up with perpetuated the idea that people who are not white are barbarians. It reinforced the idea that Africa, Asia, and South America are savage places with a lot of cannibals, wild animals, and uneducated people. One of the most popular kids authors in the USSR and post-soviet countries (sort of local Dr. Seuss), Korney Chukovsky, in one of his poems – beloved by many kids today as well- wrote, “Small children, do not go to Africa for a stroll! There are sharks, gorillas, and big angry crocodiles, who will bite and hurt you. Do not go to …show more content…
Another example of how being civilized was treated in the kids media is Pippi Longstocking’s father from “Pippi Longstocking” by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. Another extremely popular kids’ book in Belarus, yet, another example establishing European superiority. Pippi's father was a sea-captain and one day he disappeared. Later, we learn that he was able to get in the island full of cannibals, who were also black; however, they loved him so much that later they made him their king. Maybe it is not as a striking example; however, I believe, it reinforces the idea that white people are better as governors and know better what “barbarians” need. There were also Soviet cartoons that portrayed people from Africa as half-naked wearing plant leaves instead of clothes and dancing happy ritual dances with animal like giraffes uncivilized barbarians fascinated with educated Soviet travelers. I am telling all that not to prove that USSR was horribly racist (although it was in a great extent), but to show how such a thing as kids’ books and TV-shows that are often being dismissed as a non-important part of the media can perpetuate a certain point …show more content…
Even aside from stereotypes of barbarian vs. civilized, people usually tend to surround themselves with things that are defined as civilized. Best technologies, cars, decent houses, nuclear families, better schools, significant books, and so on. Also, education is highly respected in the Western world. Usually, people who do not have a college education are not as respected as people who do have it. Besides, people tend to dismiss any political and social problem that are not happening in the Western world by saying something like, “What else can you expect from these barbarians. They are all just evil and up to no good”. A lot of Russian men find comfort in thinking that women in Muslim countries are treated far worse than in Russia, therefore, they are not misogynist and sexists, and if Russian women do not like something, they can go to Afghanistan and try to talk about women rights over there. This thinking raises a lot of questions and conversations; however, it is also, once again, a contrast between “civilized” Russia and “uncivilized” Muslim countries. Positive effects of the concept of civilization, I think, is an aspiration to make person’s life as comfortable as possible which means new cures to the diseases and new technologies that are created to improve people’s lives. By saying all of the above, I think that the concept of being civilized, although changed, has the same roots as it used

After they conquered most of the known world and built their own empire, Mongols were known to be two things when it comes to history: great conquerors and barbarians. In terms of the former, no literature can contest that they deserved to be called and regarded as such. Inversely, the case of the latter remains an open debate to historians and even the rest of the world. This paper aims to arrive to a verdict whether the term barbarian is fitting to the Mongols or not. During the time when they were tearing down cities after cities and kingdoms after kingdoms, the Mongols were stereotyped and feared as ruthless vanquishers with barbaric nature.…

If George Washington and Robert E. Lee were young men today, they would be Boy Scouts and enthusiastic supporters of Scouting, as I am. In fact, in his Sept. 1796 letter to Alexander Hamilton, George Washington himself promoted youth assemblies and behavior strikingly similar to Boy Scout camporees that would take place 125 years in the future: “…but that which would render it of the highest importance, in my opinion, is that at the juvenile period of life, when friendships are formed and habits established that stick by one, young men from different parts of the United States would be assembled together, and would by degrees discover that there was not that cause for those jealousies and prejudices which one part of the Union had imbibed against another.” In my literature class recently, we were discussing how a nation moves from savagery to civilization.…

Girls play with Barbie dolls and boys play with monster trucks. Asians love Korean pop music and all Mexicans know the Taco Bell dog, right? As kids grow up, they are constantly surrounded by social media, television, celebrities, and other authoritative figures such as parents and grandparents. In this day in age, it is almost impossible not to judge a person based on how they look because of how media outlets characterize certain “types” of people. Michael Omi states in his writing, “In Living Color: Race and American Culture,” that sexism and racism-fueled events suggest the American population has created one big “system of inequality which has shaped, and in turn been shaped by, our pop culture” (539).…

Many people believe that race is biological when in fact it is a social construct. There are no genes common to all blacks or all whites, a person who would be considered black in the United States might be considered white in Brazil or colored in South Africa. How a person perceives their race identity can change with experience and over time. This does not only apply to people who are multiracial, these changes in racial identity can be determined by our society, which insists on the rigidity, which has not yet been defined. In the book According To Our Hearts by Angela Onwuachi-Willig speaks on interracial marriages and the changes in racial identity.…

A civilized society is hard to define due to the cause of uniqueness around the world and the diversity between societies. What makes one society civilized may be in contrast to another society 's beliefs, which makes determining a civilized society a difficult task. By definition, a civilized society is one that has been brought to a stage of social, cultural, and moral development and is considered to be more advanced. In the novel, Things Fall Apart, Achebe writes the story to portray the Ibo society as a civilized society in many aspects of life including government, religion, and societal roles. To begin, the Ibo society is civilized in many aspects of its culture, including the government, including the organization of men in the clan.…
