What Did Hoover Do During The Great Depression

When the depression first began Herbert Hoover didn’t think the depression was going to last and he gave many speeches to help people regain their confidence and give them hope which he thought would improve the situation. He also invited businesses, financial, and labor leaders into the White House to encourage them to keep their businesses open and to do their best to prevent layoffs and keep wages stable. (1085) One of the things he did to create jobs was to start government construction jobs, although it was difficult because of cutbacks by the government. In addition, under Hoovers request the Federal Reserve Board went back to an easier monetary policy. In the end Hoover did not acknowledge and understand how serious the depression really was and in turn never did enough to stop it from getting worse. (1086) “In June of 1930, Hoover told a delegation of bankers that the “depression is over”.” (1086) But that was far from true seeing as by the fall of that year there were five million people unemployed. The first New Deal created many new programs that were aimed to help improve the country. One of the programs was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which provided work for boys who were unemployed and unmarried. They did a variety of work and made thirty dollars a month and twenty five dollars of their pay got sent home to their families. The CCC employed about 3 million young men. Another one of the programs he created was called the National Industrial Recovery Act, “the two major parts of which dealt with economic recovery and public-works projects.” (1107) The Public Works Administration was created and gave jobs to private contractors to build things like Skyline Drive in Virginia and the Chicago Subway
