The Sahara Desert was actually good for the people that lived near it for many reasons. The first and most important, was that trading of goods was started there. It is not known when but when it did, the people became very successful. The first to start trading were the Berbers. They traded manufactured goods and food in Ghana and carried them across the Sahara Desert. The goods ended up in Mediterranean markets.
