According to Pender (2011), the theoretical propositions of the HPM, “provide a basis for investigative work on health behaviors” (p.5). This meshes well with this prospectus, for the intervention that will be studied is a health promoting after-school program with a curriculum regarding health behaviors, such as physical activity and nutrition. There are 14 theoretical propositions within the HPM. The assumptions described previously are included within these propositions. The theoretical constructs include the following aspects: past behaviors, genetic and learned traits, influencers of both interpersonal and environmental facets, perceptions of ability and inability, commitment facilitators and barriers, and the ability to modify one’s behavior …show more content…
Nurse practitioners have the ability to facilitate these changes by providing fun educational activities of health promotion. Nurse practitioners can also influence the interpersonal and situational influencers through the use of role modelling, advocacy, and encouragement of family presence in the ASP. By creating incentives for change, nurse practitioners can help increase the commitment to healthy behaviors (Pender, 2011). Incentives such as stickers, small trinkets, and an end-of-the-year celebration can be used within this ASP. The independent variable is the health promoting ASP. The dependent variables are the following: nutritional knowledge, nutritional habits, physical activity, and adipose reduction. The health promoting ASP is a program that offers underserved children an outlet to improve their health and wellbeing. Health is defined as a state within a continuum of disease and wellness. Health can be any state that an individual sees as a positive state of wellbeing, where unhealthy is considered a negative state with more illness than wellbeing. Those with chronic conditions can still be in a state of health if the conditions are managed to where they have a positive state of wellbeing. Nutritional knowledge is the knowledge of beneficial dietary practices and intake, such as the notion that fruit and vegetable intake is better than consuming large amounts of sugared beverages. Nutritional habits are the daily behaviors regarding nutritional intake. These habits guide the daily nutritional behaviors. Physical fitness is the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal conditioning that strengthens and conditions an individual to perform physically exerting activities. Sedentary behavior and activities are the acts that decrease physical fitness.
