The implications for the past are that since PGD is a relatively new they wouldn’t of had access to PGD therefore couples wouldn’t of had the choice to continue with the pregnancy or not or decide whether they want to keep the embryo or discard it. They wouldn’t have known if their child had a genetic condition. Also the couples who had trouble conceiving wouldn’t of had a chance to have a biological child they would of had to adopt a child or choosen to have a surrogate mother or even made the hard decision of not having a child.
The implications for the present are that we do have access to PGD and it is changing the way how some people have children. PGD helps to give …show more content…
PGD can have some negative impacts on society if the process is used too frequently or for what I consider the wrong reasons. I believe that sometimes the use of PGD is unnecessary especially for gender selection which is available in some countries for example the United States, but thankfully it is illegal in New Zealand. In my opinion discarding other perfectly good embryos just so you can get the gender you want to ‘complete’ your family like what Nicola Trathen did is unethical. I also believe that using PGD for non-threatening disorders that don’t involve a shorten life-span is unnecessary for example Down-Syndrome. As Rebecca E. Kopp has addressed people who have down-syndrome are capable of having a rewarding and meaningful life. They are also valued members of our society. These down-syndrome individuals bring light and joy into our lives and provide us with a ‘refreshing’ outlook on life. Therefore, using PGD in this way can definitely be seen as unethical. It can be seen that we are discriminating against people who have disabilities as it looks like we are wanting to try and make a ‘perfect society’ getting rid of any other human that is tainted by a disease. To conclude my opinion on this controversial topic of PGD is that it is an effective method to prevent having a very sick child with a serious disorder that is life-threatening. But, for other cases when the embryos can develop into perfectly good human beings or can have a happy life but is discarded for superficial reasons or because they want to have a normal or perfect child is when I do not agree with the use of
