Today’s society in the United States is a technological paradise where answers can be found in the blink of an eye on a smart phone and trips across the world can be made in a matter of hours. Innovations and constant breakthroughs have made people smarter and more efficient but, consequently, have also made the nation, as a whole, distracted. With on-going industrialization, the environment has taken an abrupt turn for the worst. The solution for the past few decades has been to “go green.” Words like “recycle” and “solar energy” have become focal points for many people, and the question for our society has become, “How can we fix this problem that has been created?”…
Our American society today is highly driven by consumerism, technology and development, but is very wasteful and extremely tolling on the environment. Although we’d probably like to think that we are the best society, the reality is that a lot of our alleged “progress” is regressing on the…
We all (hopefully) want to help the environment, but we don’t want to change the way we live our lives. If we could change, however, it would make a world of a difference in helping Earth's environment. Stegner hopes to provide information to help people want to change a grow an ethical view on how we use the land today. Stegner also talks about how the environment was saved with the help of Reagan and his administration. All this can be paired with wendell Berry's Idea of a Local Economy in a way that would change the world as we know it, in a good way.…
We must change the way we think, behave and live among other species. As we learned, man was created for the world and not the other way around, so it should be our mission to leave the world in a more harmonious and sustainable way. Our mission should be to change the minds, actions and habits of present and future generations toward the environment. Many environmentalist have stated that, we have to protect human health and our environment by reducing artificial climate change, air pollution, land availability, soil erosion and water scarcity. We must adopt the same principle that John Stuart Mill promoted which is “we as a people have a moral duty to increase good for the greater number of people”.…
On August 5, 1585 Jane Langley had witnessed one of the most scariest and disappointing events she could remember. 118 colonist, including herself, that had been hoping for a better life in America had just arrived in Roanoke; an island off the coast of North Carolina. As Jane and her family waited on the supply ship to come in, she watched her little brother. Her brother was a short, blond, four year old who knew nothing on what was going on. All of a sudden she heard her mother scream in panic and saw her father and every man that could, run to the shore.…

Since the dawn of human existence, nature has been, as poet Emily Dickinson writes in her poem title, "the gentlest mother." The Earth has provided the human race with all of life's necessities, allowing us to prosper as a species, and reach for great heights. However, we repay this nurturing mother by depleting and destroying her, and one day, despite her immense strength, she will no longer be able to tolerate human excess. In the current, consumer driven American culture, value, and purpose is placed foremost on human life. And with climate change becoming an ever-pressing reality in human life, it is imperative to change our thinking.…
To be an American means that you're a U.S. Citizen and know your rights. Also Americans have more freedom than other countries. Some they have the students go to school with just girls or boys and here he have the right to go to school with boys and girls. Another example would be that women are allowed to work and in other places they can't work. They either have to stay home and watch their kids and make food for their husbands.…
Our planet and they whole system was created for a specific purpose, and each serves God, and our responsibility of, protecting, and maintaining it, has failed. Many current events remind me of, the situations from this module, for example the protest by the Native American tribes against the building of the oil pipe line. While it seem logical to invest in economy sustaining measures for our country, but the problem lies above national patriotism, because our pollution affects future generations of life, to include our offspring. Building a oil pipe line across the country underneath water sources used by a large majority of the middle United States, should involve more investigation of the possible safety hazards to include busted oil lines.…
Adlai Stevenson once said "Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime. " Being an American citizen is more than what is printed on your birth certificate. Our country is one of the most impacting and inspirational lands that you can see or be a part of. I believe that being an American defines a person, as well as a nation.…
As everyday life goes on around the world, humans often get wrapped up in their own affairs and neglect to turn their attention toward the vulnerability of nature. In 1962, ecologist Rachel Carson became fed up with the reckless neglect in the treatment of the environment and as a result, boldly went where no w¬oman had gone before with her writing of the attitude-altering book, Silent Spring. After gaining publicity, the controversial book fueled a much-needed debate over the fate of the environment. In the passage, Carson attempts to transform the American public’s attitude toward the environment by educating citizens on the detrimental consequences of parathion usage, calling attention to Americans’ oblivion to the problem, and warning of…
Today, more Americans are beginning to value nature and realize the important role it plays in our world. After seeing how much damage society has caused with pollution and deforestation, people recognize the need to respect the Earth. Examples of this include the trend toward living a vegetarian or even vegan lifestyle which shows respect for the creatures that roam the planet. In addition, people are buying energy efficient appliances and recycling to conserve energy and produce less waste. More effort is being made to preserve existing forests.…
Mother nature seems to be an indestructible force. Perhaps that is why we continue to deplete her natural resources and pollute her air. Perhaps, as a race we have grown accustomed to modern luxuries which we deem more important than the ground beneath our feet. In her book Silent Spring, Rachel Carson asks, “Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?” (Carson 12).…
Those of us that are alive today may not see the catastrophic consequences of our actions but the generations of our families down the line will feel the effects of the choices that we make today. With the acceptance of environmental laws, the understanding that we are at the center of this issue, and realizing the need to protect we can head down the right path and begin to make positive steps to the future stability of the planet. The strikes are piling up against us, but humans have overcome great challenges, and if we accept this as a challenge people will step up and take responsibility for our actions both in the past and heading into the…
It is evident that America’s consumer based culture expands exponentially, due to our ceaseless appetite for materialistic lifestyles. We are a greedy and selfish population, with absolutely no regard for our environment, or our Earth as a whole. We consume nonrenewable resources millions of times faster than they can replenish, and refuse to transition to renewable energy sources due to monetary expenses. Although it is understandable that Global South (developing) countries exploit nonrenewable energy sources in order to advance their infrastructure, Global North (developed) nations should be able to provide monetary aid to these countries in order to avoid the furthering crisis of global warming and climate change. These issues are so horrifically controversial due to the fact that their effects occur gradually over time, and do not affect us as of right now; therefore, no one wants to reverse this issue due to it not harming their personal life on a daily basis (basically, ignorance is bliss).…
