While the term “minority” is most commonly used to reference a socially subordinate ethnic group based on one’s culture, beliefs, nationality or language; multiple other types of minorities also exist. Minority groups can also consist of individuals with physical disabilities, or economic hardships such as the poor or unemployed. The term “age minorities” refers to members of the work force that are younger or older than the typical working age. Sexual minorities also exist in the general population as well as the workforce. It has been noted at times throughout history that members of social group majorities (for example white, middle class heterosexual males) have attempted to present themselves as an oppressed minority in an effort to further their social benefits. It is important to note that all existing large societies encompass ethnic minorities. The said minorities may indigenous to their specific region or community or may have migrated to the area from elsewhere. In certain regions of the world, secondary ethnic groups may establish a numerical majority. An example of this is the Black population in South Africa – despite their numerical majority, members of the white race continue to hold the majority of power. Members of minority groups continue to face discrimination and inequality around the world. Societies, in general, continue to tend to categorize and critique all types of minorities; despite consciously knowing that it is wrong. According to Hanser, “cultural diversity refers to a concept whereby the history, beliefs, behaviors, language, traditions and values of racial and/or ethnic groups are what make them distinct.” (page 5) Cultures throughout the world are comprised of a majority and multiple minorities. The cultural norms of the majority are often viewed by a society as what is expected or correct. In all cultures, there are basic standards for social interaction, such as personal space/distance, eye contact, amount of body language displayed in public, negotiating style, etc. In America, as in other leading nations, many individuals have developed a habit of assuming that those who vary from what is considered to be “normal” are wrong or incorrect. It is crucial for members of society to realize that cultural diversity makes our country better-off by making it a more stimulating place in which to live. Just think how much more exciting mealtimes are in this nation with multiple influences of the Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, Italian, German, French and Indian food! Cultural diversity also strengthens our country and better suites it to participate in the ever-changing global economy.
