The government watches who takes what and documents all donations and help. Programs like TANF usually stop helping the families or individuals after they see that they are stable enough to survive on their own. Dr. Annette Bosworth, who was running in the Republican primary in 2014, indirectly compared welfare participants that receive food stamps to “animals” (Lachman). However, according to a graph created by the Atlantic, welfare recipients are “spend significantly less than families not receiving public assistance on essentially everything” (Couch). Another argument would be that the government also helps non-Americans, like illegal immigrants, which lowers the resources for Americans that are in need. “About 51% of immigrant-led households receive at least one kind of welfare benefit,” however, many of the benefits of welfare are going to children of immigrants that were born in the United States (Gomez).
In conclusion, the different programs of welfare provided has greatly helped Americans during their times of struggle. Housing programs give people a place to live, Pell grants help pay for the secondary education of students, and SNAP provides food stamps for those who have low income and cannot afford to buy groceries.
