It is a known fact that the most effective way to captivate one’s readers is through relation. The reader needs to understand the situation and atmosphere; achieving this is the goal of every author. A common way to accomplish a reliable story is through the use of universally recognized models or archetypes. These identifiable archetypes can be seen in symbols, themes, or plots; however, the most typically used are the character archetypes, a broad range of story stereotypes ranging from the pure-hearted hero to the sneaky magician. Obviously from the source that Windsdor cites is quite some time ago, being in the 20th century itself. Windsdor also goes onto say that the stereotypical mentors that you saw back then and nowadays were pretty much the same, being old wise men/ women. Because we know that both mentor archetypes were similar in the 20th century and today, we can make a connection between the both, safely saying that it hasn’t changed much from even quite some time ago. Windsdor brings up another quote of Vogler’s saying “The Mentor is there to protect the hero and to help him discern between right and wrong. More often than not, the Mentor is teaching the hero lessons he has learned from his own experience.…

Until this year, I never really saw the importance of having a mentor, and I think this is because I rejected the idea of being completely vulnerable with another person. Although, this section in MacDonald’s book really brought into perspective that as a leader without someone wiser than myself, I will not be “sharpened” or in other words, I will not grow in my faith the way I wish to. A mentor who is not afraid to be honest, and call me out on my wrongs, but also recognize my strengths is important. Specifically, I find my mentor quick to call me out when she feels I am not being fully honest (which is a lot), and I need that. I have began to think how hard life would be without her by my side, and I thank God everyday for bringing her into my life.…

It will also help me become aware that although challenges will arise, I can overcome them if I handle the situation appropriately. My ideal mentor would not only be willing to help me in that situation but would also follow up after some time to make sure I was able to solve the problem. I also want my mentor to know me on a personal level. They should know my current and future goals in life and should care about them as much as I do so that they can help me stay on the right track. An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

SEP #4 In my observation of a Kindergarten class, there were many different teaching methods used.
