Film Noir includes dark, suspense-filled and thrilling mysteries. They are usually ambiguous, pessimistic and emphasize the isolated feel of the modern cities. The usage of low-key lighting and dark colors to create high contrast on screen is very common. Low-angle shots and Dutch camera angles, which are shot with tilted camera angles, are used to portray tension. Instead of showing a person directly, they commonly used disorientation and showed people reflected in a mirror.…

A Good Rewrite is Hard to Find In his short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell tells the thrilling story of a skilled hunter named Rainsford, who washes up on a mysterious island where he falls captive to General Zaroff, a psychopathic man that preys on “the scum of the earth” simply for the thrill and excitement of the hunt. Connell builds suspense throughout the story through his use of dialogue and character behaviour. Richard Connell predominantly uses character interactions to build suspense as the plot progresses, utilizing dialogue to create a mysterious tone and to foreshadow the predicaments that Rainsford will soon find himself in. During the conversation between Whitney and Rainsford on the yacht, Whitney tells Rainsford that he felt an oddly distinct chill while sailing past the supposedly cursed island, even though "there was no breeze [and the] sea was as flat as a plate-glass window" (Connell 2).…

The Third Lie, Endings At first perusal, it may appear that Peter Brooks, author of Reading for the Plot is criticizing post-modern fiction, the genre in which The Third Lie, the final installment of the trilogy, by Agota Kristof is written. What Brooks is doing, in fact, is describing how the writing of story endings are effected by post-modern literary theory – e.g.: lack of a master plot, “tie up” through retribution or “marriage” (Brooks, Reading for the Plot (1985)). Brooks states that fictional conclusions written by post-modern authors have the capacity to leave readers unsatisfied and required to construct their own ending. Brook’s assertions do not fully apply to The Third Lie. Kristof does bring her story of Claus and Lucas to a close,…
