Woodward was born in 1943 in Illinois and attended Yale University with an ROTC scholarship, where he studied history and English literature. He graduated from Yale and went on to spend five years in the U.S. Navy. In 1971, he applied for and entered the Washington Post as a reporter. On the other hand, Carl Bernstein was born in 1944 to parents who were active members of the American Communist Party. Unlike Woodward, Bernstein dropped out of college, but was still able to obtain a job at the Washington Post in 1966. In 1972, Woodward, still a new reporter, covered a story about a break in at the Watergate complex. Bernstein wrote a sidebar piece on Woodward’s story and soon asked his editors if he could cover the story with Woodward. From then until 1974, Woodward and Bernstein covered the Watergate scandal
