The Watergate Scandal
The Watergate scandal was arguably one of the worst scandals that occurred within the American Government that ultimately brought down the Nixon presidency. The scandal involved the break-in of the Democratic Party Headquarters, the cover-up of the break-in, and other scandals that the investigation ultimately revealed. It was the worst scandal in American history due to the fact that it was an attempt to undermine the American political process. However, it also prompted a wave of electoral and political reforms. On June 17th in 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington,

These journalists ultimately helped to bring down the Nixon administration. In 1974, Woodward and Bernstein published a book entitled All the President’s Men which was about the Watergate scandal. In this book they spoke about their secret informant, who was given the pseudonym “deep throat.” This source provided the journalists with ample information regarding the involvement of the Nixon administration in Watergate. In 2005, it was finally revealed that this source, although he denied allegations for years, was in fact former FBI associate director, Mark …show more content…
However, one tape had a huge eighteen minute gap in it. Although nobody truly knows what dialogue was missing from the tapes, it was known that the conversation was between Nixon and chief of staff, Haldeman. Nixon’s secretary, Rosemary Woods, claimed that the gap was due to her own fault when transcribing the tapes. She stated that he accidentally hit the record button instead of stop, which deleted the missing sections of the tape. At the hearings, Woods was unable to recreate her stated mistake. The tape known as the “smoking gun” tape, revealed that just six days after the Watergate break-in, Nixon and Haldeman discussed ways to obstruct the FBI’s investigation. As the contents of these tapes become available to the public, a host of abuses by Nixon became abundantly clear. This included the White House’s orchestration into psychiatrist Dan Ellsberg who leaked the Pentagon Papers, dirty political tricks against rivals, use of the IRS to harass political enemies, sale of ambassadorships, threats to broadcasters to revoke their licenses, and harassing the media to the solicitation of huge cash campaign

On June 17, 1972, several months before President Nixon was reelected, burglars had broken into the Democratic National Committee offices in Washington, D.C. These burglars were traced back to the White House. This seemed like Nixon's aides were trying to spy on the Democrats. However President Nixon said he didn't know anything about the Watergate break-in. Law enforcement agents continued to investigate the case, which led them back to Nixon’s chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman in 1973.…

Imagine if the president was involved in a scandal that required multiple cover-ups and lies, ruining the trust in the government. He, along with his robbers, planned to break into the federal government’s Watergate building and steal confidential files and documents. The Watergate Scandal truly began in 1972, when Nixon and his reelection committee were caught during the process of stealing the files. Watergate, an office complex located near the Potomac in Washington never seemed to serve as such an important place as it did on the evening of June 17. 1972. On that evening a burglary took place that not only would shape the rest of current President Nixon’s term in office, but would also shape how the American people see their President, and how the American people sees their government. Nevertheless, the story of the robbery came to Woodward on a Saturday, quite confused by the location of the robbery because two years earlier the building had been a place where thousands on Anit-Nixon Protesters shouted slurs to the Republican party that had been in the Watergate complex (APM 14) Quickly following a few phone calls Woodward realized that…

As Theodore White notes "The clumsy break-in at Democratic headquarters in 1972 by Nixon men was technically criminal but of no uglier morality than the spying at Barry Goldwater's headquarters which Howard Hunt of the CIA had supervised for Lyndon Johnson in 1964" (White 325). What made Nixon's activity lead to his resignation was the fact that did not fear any repercussions from engaging in such illegalities. He believed so fiercely in the secrecy of the Presidency that he never feared the repercussions of having machines recording self-incriminating evidence in the White House. After being accused of seeing himself as "above the law" by Dan Rather, Nixon stated the…

Those agents also listened to phone calls and stole papers from the Democratic Party. All of these were severe breaches of the law, but unlike what many think, it was not the actual crimes that caused Nixon the most hurt. As with many crimes, historian Anthony Summers believes that “it was his lying that most damaged him during Watergate” (p 2). After denying it for two years, a tape was found that showed Nixon's involvement despite repeated denials. Not wanting to hurt the country more through the process of impeachment, Nixon resigned from the office on August 8,…

On June 17, 1972, five men broke into the Democratic headquarters, located in the Watergate complex in Washington DC. They would have never been caught if not for a few pieces of tape covering the latches on some of the doors. Mr. Frank Willis, a security guard, noticed them, removed them and thought nothing of it. After a few hours he found that the latches have been re-taped and he called the police. Soon after the burglars were caught and arrested.…

Scared that more information similar to the Pentagon Papers would be released to the public, Nixon organized a secret Special Investigation Unit to prevent “leaks” of information that might harm “national security.” The members of the committee were aptly dubbed the Plumbers. To soothe Nixon’s worries about his political opponents in the upcoming elections, CREEP-Committee for the Re-election of the President- worked to promote the candidate that would be easiest to defeat. The Plumbers played dirty tricks on the Democratic candidates, hoping to turn the presidential hopefuls against each other. Yet none of none of these scams compare to the infamous Watergate…

In the early 1970’s there was a break in at the Democratic National Committee Headquarters, which came to be known as the Watergate break-ins. Upon Investigation It was found that top white house officials, the CIA, FBI and even the president at the time Richard Nixon was involved in trying to cover it up. This led to Richard Nixon resigning which in my opinion was to save face from the impeachment that was coming his way. In the upcoming paragraphs I will be summarizing and examining two different articles on the Watergate crisis, where both authors have totally different views on the events in which happened. I will also discuss how this has changed America’s views on politics as well as how things may be different had this unfolded in this time with social media being the way it is.…
