Watergate Scandal Break In American History

The Watergate scandal might just be the biggest political scandal in American history. The Watergate scandal was about a break-in at Democratic National Headquarters. It was discovered that the participants were involved with Republican members of Nixon's administration. When news of the break-in came out the Nixon administration tried to cover the incident up. That was what led to the hearings and possible impeachment proceedings. Nixon ended up resigning as President. Around the time of the Watergate scandal, Americans had mixed feelings on Nixon’s performance in office. Majority of America disapproved of the way the president was handling domestic policy, although they approved greatly about his foreign affair policies. The Watergate Scandal was a very serious matter because it revealed corruption in the Nixon administration. While some said the so called scandal was just politics that every party engages in. In May 1973, there was enough evidence of possible wrongdoing to bring Nixon to trial before the Senate. Evident proved the involvement in the break in and cover up. This affair was the product of two separate initiatives during the administration of President Ronald Reagan. The first was a commitment to aid the contras who were conducting a guerrilla war against Nicaragua. The second was to calm “moderates” with in the Iranian government in order to secure the release of American hostages held by Iranian groups in Lebanon and to encourage Iranian foreign policy in the West. American Citizens had a very neutral view on the Iran-contra affair because they wanted the American hostages back home but they also didn’t want to sell weapons to a country that we could potentially be at war
