Boom! Shots fired as the U.S went to war with Mexico in 1846. After a fight on disputed land, and constant struggle between the two nations, the U.S finally decided to declare war on Mexico. So, did the United States have a good reason to go to war with Mexico? The United States was not justified, or proved right in going to war with Mexico, because Mexico was only defending its borders, the U.S was robbing Mexico of its land, and the Americans in Texas were breaking Mexican law.
First of all, the Mexican war was not justified was because Mexico was only defending its own borders from the U.S. First of all, the United States attacked on Mexican soil. The attack took place between the Nueces river and the Rio Grande, which is part of Mexican territory. Also, according to Jesus Velasco-Marquez in “ A Mexican Viewpoint on the War With the United States,” he explained how “ ...the mobilization U.S Army was an outright attack on Mexico,” in the eyes of the Mexican Government. In addition, in the daily “El Tiempo,” Velasco-Marquez continued to say, “The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a traveler.” …show more content…
One of the many laws broken included the abolition of slavery, which Mexico had decreed after being liberated from Spain, in 1821. Charles Sumner in “Objection to the Mexican American War,” stated that, “slaveholders crossed the Sabine river between Louisiana and Texas with their slaves, in defiance of the Mexican ordinance of freedom.” American citizens contradicted and disgrace their country's beliefs in their defiance and disrespectful actions towards the neighboring country, Mexico. This evidence sums up the fact that the U.S was not justified in going to war with Mexico, because the U.S was responsible for creating the tension which caused Mexico to defend and fight
