The United States was not justified in going to war against Mexico in 1846. The United States didn’t have a valid reason to respond with violence against the Mexican government. The war with Mexico was also provoked because of the United States’ belief of manifest destiny. Polk was ambitious to seize new territory from the Mexicans but was disappointed when they refused to sell him California, this could have also made him want to wage war against Mexico. The United States leader, President Polk, provoked Mexico into attacking the U.S. troops. These reasons all show that the United States didn’t have any business starting war with Mexico for some territory that was rightfully owned by Mexico. When the country had strong feelings for manifest destiny they suddenly started a war With Mexico. Manifest destiny was the widely held beliefs in the United States that the American settlers were destined to expand throughout the continent. He didn’t only capture Texas but he also got California and Oregon. The Mexicans rejected Polk’s offer from John Slidell and were insulted by it too. Polk offered up to twenty five million dollars and the Mexicans still rejected the offer. Polk was then in frustration and that led to him thinking of sneaky ways to get Mexico to give him the land he desired. His actions of frustration showed how greedy he was for new territory, and he no longer cared about how he claimed his land. Polk was so greedy for land he was willing to risk death and bloodshed of his people for revenge against the rejection of the treaty and his want of manifest destiny. The U.S. troops then went to war with Mexico and it satisfied Polk with the bloodshed and the United Sates clearly provoked the unjust war with Mexico by showing up on their land ready to
