It was the start of World War II that started all of it. World War II was a battle that started between Germany and The Soviet Union that started by Hitler sending around 3 million Nazi soldiers in June 22,1941. It was a battle the Soviet Union was sure they where going to win and a battle that Germany thought they would for sure lose, and then it happened.Four years later, with no hope of a German victory in World War II, Hitler committed suicide on April 30,1945. When the Soviet Union won and beat Germany. Germany was now fighting for what there rights were, even after the war. At the time, no one knew what was going to happen. They just sat there in there homes and waited. Years went by and still nothing was enforced after the war. The people of Berlin thought something was going to happen but nothing happened. More years went by and then it was finally the time when the GDR and the Soviet Union did something that would effect everyone in Berlin that no one saw coming. …show more content…
At the time Berlin did not have the upper hand when it comes to the war. So then the Allie forces which were countries like France, American and Great Britain, in forced the wall that was getting built in Berlin in 1961, August 13. They called this area the Soviet zone. They built the wall on the west side of Berlin. Shortly after midnight on the day in 1961, East German soldiers begin laying down bricks and barbed wire as a barrier between Soviet controlled East Berlin and the democratic western section of the city. Many Berlin residents on that first morning found themselves suddenly cut off from friends or family members in the other half of the city. Behind the wall on the East German side was a so-called “Death Strip”: a gauntlet of soft sand (to show footprints), floodlights, vicious dogs, trip-wire machine guns and patrolling soldiers with orders to shoot escapees on sight.From 1961 to 1989, a total of 5,000 east Germans escaped, but more tried after that and
