Wagonshaks Incorporated: A Narrative Fiction

They had not long left Alistair's house when he told Storm there was something he wanted to show him. It wasn't going to be a long detour and they wouldn't be getting out of the car. He had turned off the highway, soon after reaching the outskirts of the city. “We need to be very discreet. Best to try to look like we live around here.”
“Wagonshaks Incorporated is an international company. They’re used by the government to set up and service the emergency shelters—the internment camps.”
“You mean those emergency camps for homeless and the refugees, don’t you?”
Alistair pointed his finger at Storm. “That’s what they’ve been telling us. But they’ve been popping up along main trunk lines for the last couple of years. They have been using the

There’s so much glare! Even with these sunglasses on. It's coming at me from all sides. It’s like bloody snow glare on a ski field. Incredible! Never had it this bad before.”
“Old age, maybe?” Storm chuckled from the back seat.
Alistair didn't reply.
“So which direction we going in?”
“Coonabarabran, you idiot! What makes you think that I'd take you anywhere different?”
Storm stared up at the sky. He couldn't make out the outline of a single cloud. It seemed to be one solid iridescent metallic gray. He blinked several times. The hues changed as he watched and it became a yellowish white.
Alistair pointed over the steering wheel. “Hey! See that?”
Less than a half a mile ahead of them Storm made out the glint of metal. The object was not moving. A thin column of smoke drifting in the wind.
“It’s a car in the road”
“It doesn't look good.”
Alister squinted over the staring wheel. “Shit! A car crash.”
“Surely not. The road's dead straight.”
“Maybe the driver fell asleep and crossed over.”
“Where's the other car then?”
The shattered station wagon was set on a diagonal on the centerline. An old couple stood on the verge beside their vehicle, the woman’s head resting on the man’s shoulder. The man turned to watch them pull over, wide eyed, mouthing words

There could be more than one definition of a beautiful place; they all differ from each other. For example, the sight and sound of ocean waves colliding with each other as they ooze onto the shore of the beach could be a definition of a beautiful place; however, the sight of gleaming city lights with the glowing silver shine of the moon resting in the sky could also be a definition of a beautiful place. Hume Lake Christian Camp is my definition of a beautiful place. It is located in the Sequoia National Forest in Hume, Fresno County, California.…

As Chance secured the buggy, he watched Kat spread a blanket on the ground. She sat down, pressing her blue calico dress next to her ankles. Perhaps the mild April air reminded him of home, but somehow her simple action took him a lifetime away, to another woman, to another time, to memories he’d always hold dear to his heart. Thoughts of his own wife made him wonder how Jake had ever let Kat get away.…

Historical events and precious moments no longer take precedence as photography’s main funcion, bringing the niche into the spotlight as one of the most popular forms of visual and social art. Along with other forms of art nowadays, photographs can sometimes be expensive to purchase, especially if taken by a famous photographer and in correspondence with the latest cultural trends. At the moment, the most expensive photo ever taken is priced at $4.3 million, in 1999, and was taken by the German visual artist Andreas Gursky. The photograph is named Rhein II, and apart from its incredible cost, is both a beautiful and controversial piece of modern art.…

On the south there was blue sky, golden sunlight and tranquility; on the north, there was a menacing curtain of boiling black dust that appeared to reach a thousand or more feet into the air. It had the appearance of a mammoth waterfall in reverse – color as well as form. The apex of the cloud was plumed and curling, seething and tumbling over itself from north to south and whipping trash, papers, sticks, and cardboard cartons before it. Even the birds were helpless in the turbulent onslaught and dipped and dived without benefit of wings as the wind propelled them. As the wall of dust and sand struck our house the sun was instantly blotted out completely.…

Rain slammed against the windshield, and the dark roads became darker, rural streets coated in frozen sleet. I softly swore under my breath, neck craned at an extreme angle to peer out of the inch of clear window I could actually see out of. It had been raining for days, and my distaste for driving in it had lead me to stay holed up in a hotel with Netflix and room service for the past week. My twin had been texting me nonstop for hours, both begging me to return home and telling me not to dare show my face unless I came bearing Nutella. She was such a child sometimes.…

Mama drove her blue Valiant, rattle-trap car up the U-shaped driveway. There were roses in the arc, red, coral and pink. Roses, not tight-budded roses, but rather old fashioned, having loose and simple petals, resembling Dogwood flowers more than the orderly roses in my mother’s garden. At the top of the drive, stood my Grandparent’s cinderblock, two-story home, our vacation destination. Momma kept her car running, as I along with my two older brothers, Randy and Roger disembarked; suit cases and garbage bag incased pillows in our hands.…
