The poem “To Myself” by W.S. Merwin had me very, very confused the first few times reading through it. It wasn't until I payed closer attention to the title of the piece that it all came together. I, at first, could not for the life of me figure out who the author was referring to in the poem. I thought, maybe a lost love one or maybe some abstract idea such as death or time. By the time that I actually got around to reading the title again I felt like a total buffoon. Throughout the duration of this poem W.S. Merwin is referring to himself.
