As Hoeger and Hoeger (2014, P.195) puts it “Cardiorespiratory endurance is the single most important component of health related physical fitness”.
The reason why cardiorespiratory endurance is so important is because at its base level it helps us with our daily tasks, such as walking up and down stairs with ease or playing a game of tag with friends at the park, but at elite levels the higher the cardiorespiratory endurance of an athlete can make the difference between a good athlete and a professional athlete (Heyward and Gibson, 2014)
Vo2 Max testing is a way in which to accurately record an athlete’s peak aerobic performance levels, the Vo2 Max test analyses the maximal capacity of aerobic work the body can output over a period of time. There are two types of Vo2 Max tests; a continuous and discontinuous test. The continuous test has no resting periods before exercise increments and the discontinuous will have several minutes between exercise increments. A standard form of Vo2 Max testing is on either a treadmill or exercise bike where after a warm up period of 10 minutes an athlete is set to reach their peak aerobic output by facing increasing increments of difficulty, generally to exhaustion, which gives a reading for Vo2 Max.
