It believes that the best moral action is the one that maximises utility. In the modern organisation, it is very difficult for an organisation to make an ethical decision based on this approach as it is difficult to evaluate all consequences that it will bring.
Deontology is a duty based theory focuses on agent's motive rather than the consequences of their action (Etzioni, 1996). They act accordingly regardless of good or bad consequences. For example, Kantianism focus more on whether they can fulfil their duty rather than doing what will maximise societal welfare. As for justice ethics, it concentrates on believing that everyone deserves to be treated equally. This requires the organisation to make fair decisions to all the employees.
From above, we can conclude that both utilitarianism and deontological are action based approach which focuses on rules or guidelines to drive management’s action whereas virtue ethics is agent based that is more focused on how to be a good person or how to live a good life. According to Maclntyre, the construction of virtues for an organisation requires ethical leadership. Ethical leadership refers to manager not only being a moral person but also having the ability to enforce the morality throughout the organisation as people look up to them (McIntyre, 1985). They are responsible in directing the organisation as effectively as possible. If they are able to set a good set of conduct, the company would more likely to flourish as it helps to maintain order in the organisation which helps the organisation’s operation run smoothly.
