The young goddess refused to accept her captivity. She ultimately refused food or even to speak to Hades. He tried to tempt her with jewels, fancy clothes and slaves to entertain her but to no avail, she still didn't talk to him. When Persephone's mother, Demeter, found out that Hades had abducted her daughter, she also found out that Zeus did not want to interfere because he was bribed by Hades. This made her so angry that she didn't not care for the crops and plants of earth, causing them to wilt and die. A famine so great follows that the animals and humans of earth begin to die as well. Finally Zeus gave in and allowed Demeter to have her daughter back. Unfortunately, under the Law of Abode, if Persephone accepted food she would be considered a guest of the Underworld, not a captive, and would have to stay there forever as Hades' bride.
