Dorothea Dix She was born in Hampden Maine, April 4, 1802. She was the eldest of three children and her father was a religious fanatic and distributor of religious tracts who made Dorothea stitch and paste the tracts together, a chore she hated. When she was 12 she went to live with her grandmother in Boston, then she went to live with her aunt in Worcester, Massachusetts. She came back and started teaching at age 14.
