Neighborhood Characteristics and Crime
Neighborhoods’ types of violent crime is related to a variety of characteristics, including job access, immigration, residential instability, foreclosures, vacancy rates, and evictions. The most common characteristics, though, would include poverty, segregation and inequality.
Any type of inequality or disadvantage in a neighborhood usually results into violent crime. Studies show that neighborhoods with higher poverty rates tend to have higher rates of violent crime. For the period 2008–12, Residents in poor households at or below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) (39.8 per 1,000) had more than double the rate of violent victimization as persons in high-income households (16.9 per 1,000).

These poverty-stricken neighborhoods can endanger children's development and kids in these areas can eventually end up in bad place later in adulthood. Studies have also shown that poverty increases children's chances of witnessing domestic violence. This can cause trauma to a child's life and development and can also cause long term problems, like violence. A kid having exposure to gun violence can make him/her more insensitive and remorseless.
