Workplace Violence Workplace violence is more wide spread now in today’s world then in the past. Workplace violence is defined as a threat of violence against workers. When you say workplace violence, there is a news story they everyone will remember, maybe not in the town or city you live in, but it is always in the news. Violence in the work place is occurring at higher rates as stress levels rise and pay does not increase. OSHA stated there is over two million American workers that are vulnerable to violence in the workplace a year. Nurses deal with physical violence on nearly a daily basis whether it be a patient that is going through withdrawals and lashes out on the nurse or just an abusive person in general that shows no respect to the profession. Police officers are another group of that has to constantly deal with drunk and disorderly people that hit or try to hit the police officers. Luckily in the IT field this is not the situation. There are many things that management can do to help prevent violence in the workplace. The number one thing is education; educate your employees about the signs of workplace violence. It is very rare that someone just comes to work one day and decides to shoot everyone, there were warning signs before that person decided to do that. My precvious position was at a local hospital, we had yearly trainging on what to do in case of a live shooter. You also learned this in orientation. You may wonder why we had that training, well one of our two hospitals had a paitnet come in, go to the ICU, and started shooting nurses. We later found out he did this because he felt it was the nurse’s fault that his mother passed away seven years earlier. He came looking for two particular nurses that took care of his mother. When he was unable to locate them he started shooting. My twin sister is a nurse and was locked in a restroom while the shooting was happening. The only thing I could think of is what if I would have lost her to someone who is crazy. They lost 4 people that day, 3 nurses and 1 civilian that was in the parking lot at the wrong time. Because of this horrible act of workplace violence the hospital goes over yearly on how to protect yourself and patients to the best of your ability in a violent situation. Without that education most people would run, scream and try to hide vs trying to get to a locked room or under a desk. To prevent workplace violence the employer must learn to respect employees, hire people for management that deserve the title, not someone that has a degree but talks down to their employees.
