When adults have a high tolerance for violence in games, movies and media they have a higher possibility of passing that down to their children. As in children adults can grow a higher tolerance to violence, just as with pain the more one endures it the higher their tolerance becomes. Some research has also shown cases of the opposite happening where an adult was accustomed to violence as a child but has a very low tolerance as an adult. However adults who choose a career path such as emergency services or the military can not only expose themselves to seeing or hearing violence, but also committing violent acts and are even more as susceptible to becoming desensitized to violence. While working within a violent career, situations arise almost every day that cause someone to act aggressively and efficiently. Two of the more stressful and dangerous careers within the United States are being a Police Officer and the Military, the fact these two careers are stressful is due to the adverse situations these professionals encounter. Due to the work environment, those that work in these career fields must be able to adjust and act without hesitation, sometimes resulting in harm of another human being.

Personnel who work in this career field are frequently called upon to take the lives of enemy combatants, more often than not being hundreds of miles away from the battle field. When given this position personnel are able to take the lives of others as if they were playing a video game, potentially never having to deal with the emotional factor of taking another human life. While there are other professions within the military that prevent personnel from physically seeing the target such as personnel on a Navy missile ship, UAV operators watch a video screen the entire time while targeting enemy visually seeing every impact. As described by Grossman, Soldiers who fought during the World War two era were more reluctant to actually engage in the enemy, most did not want to kill another human being. Soldiers not wanting to take another life was likely due to the fact of close quarters or hand to hand combat making the task of killing another person rather uncomfortable Today that level has dramatically increased soldiers one due to training but two due to the fact of not all soldiers having to face the emotional side effects.
