How Do Violent Video Games Lead To Violence?

There is a huge hype surrounding the launch of every new game system - Xbox, Playstations and Nintendo’s are being just few of the latest. Today, more and more people are contributing to the addiction and growth of video games. With each passing month video games becomes more and more realistic, in extent to the violence and harsh language used in many popular games. The main consumers for violent video games are teenagers and children, who seem to copy and mimic what they see, hear or learn from these types of ‘harmless’ games.
Many video games including Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty and Assassins Creed are just a few of many popular games that include blood, gore, intense violence, strong sexual content and the use of drugs. According to The Pew Research Center, ‘in 2008 97% of adolescences ages 12 to 17 played some type of video game, and majority played action games that involved the use of violence. Knowing how common these types of games are, it is clear that mental health can be damaged by the use of violent video games and the aspects they include.

While children and teenagers play these video games, high levels of aggression, bullying and fighting are involved while they either hit or beat-up someone within their games. As stated earlier, simulating violence such as shooting guns or hand to hand combat in video games can cause real-life violent behaviour. Video games often involve players to simulate violent actions, such as stabbing, shooting, or dismembering someone with an axe, sword, chainsaw, or other weapons.
