Orsino’s love however, differs from Viola’s because he is in love with the idea of love rather than Olivia as a person. The second Orsino sees Olivia he knows right away he wants “that.” He says, “O, when mine eyes did see Olivia first, Methought she purged the air of pestilence. That instant was I turned into a hart, And my desires like fell and cruel hounds, E’ir since pursue me” (1.1.20-24). When Orsino first saw Olivia he thought she was the most beautiful women he had ever seen, and even her presence could heal the plague. He is more in love with the idea of love because he couldn’t see Olivia for who she actually is: he sees an idealized version. Orsino does not think for a second there is a chance Olivia wouldn’t reciprocate his same feelings. “O, she that hath a heart of that fine frame. To pay this debt of love but to a brother, How will she love when the rich golden shaft hath killed the flock of all affections else. That live in her” (1.1.35-37). Orsino says Olivia’s seven year mourning is minor, and because she reacted so strongly she will react even stronger when she falls in love with him.
