Vinyl Ketenes Synthesis

Improved Essays
The reaction of vinyl ketenes and alkynes were studied. A component in drug synthesis, called halogenated catechol was used in the reaction. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) were used. This read all the components of the compound that was used. The products of alkynes and vinyl were read using the records from the NMR and GC-MS. Similar to phenols and catechols, ketenes were used for original compounds. Vinyl ketenes go under cycloaddition The compounds were then run under the machine to find results and and to see if the experiment should continue. The organic chemist ran the cycloaddition process with different vinyl ketenes and found the product of catechol for every reaction.

Discussion: Spinacia oleracea like many other plants contains leaves which play a crucial role in the process of photosynthesis. The energy used to drive the chemical reactions within photosynthesis comes from the sunlight absorbed by the chlorophyll molecules (Merzlyak, Chivkunova, Zhigalova, & Naqvi 2009). These chlorophyll molecules then transfer the light energy to chloroplasts and that light energy is converted into chemical energy (Merzlyak, Chivkunova, Zhigalova, & Naqvi 2009).…

The goal of experiment four was to use sodium dichromate to oxidize borneol to camphor. The camphor was purified using sublimation, then reduced to isomeric alcohol isoborneol with sodium borohydride. 1H NMR was used to determine the ratio of borneol to isoborneol in the final product. The experiment was carried out by using sodium dichromate to oxidize a borneol solution. Once the reaction was complete the mixture was separated using extraction techniques, dried, and ether was removed via the rotovap.…

All of theses reactions was needed in ordered to be prepared for the lab experiment. Before the lab began it was necessary to follow the lab safety rules by wearing a lab coat, googles, and gloves. There were nine unknown chemicals in nine plastic droppers labeled from one to nine sitting at the label tables. There were nine clean test tubes that were provided in order to mix the chemicals together. 10 drops of each unknown chemical was added when being mixed in test tube to perform a reaction.…

This is two week project is to evaluate the stereochemical outcome and facial selectivity of an oxidation-reduction interconversion between 4-tert- butylcyclohexanol and 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone while investigating the stereoselectivity of different reducing agents. During the first week, 4-tert-butylcyclohexanol, a secondary alcohol (mixture of cis and trans stereoisomers) is to be oxidized into a ketone, 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone using sodium hypochlorite (bleach). Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is used to monitor the progress of the the reaction. The second week of the reaction, 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone is reduced using sodium borohydride or the Meerwein-Pondorff-Verley (MPV) conditions. NMR spectroscopy is used to evaluate the stereochemical…

The purpose of this experiment was to use aldol condensation methods to synthesize colored cyclopentadienone and then UV/VIS spectrophotometry to characterize the dienone structure synthesized. The information gathered from the UV/VIS analysis was then compared to a computer model of the desired product to analyze the optimal 3D structure of the dienone. The base catalyzed condensation reaction was used to form the product for analysis, followed by vacuum filtration to recover the product. Both a melting point analysis and a UV/VIS analysis were used to analyze the composition of the obtained product. Finally, the computer model was examined to learn about the optimal angles and strain within the molecule.…

The primary method of diene synthesis was used to report other reactions of this type for over 30 years. Diels and Alder reckoned the general widespread and nature of the Diels-Alder reaction and occupied most of their work and studies developing the consequences of the reaction. Kurt Alder focused attention towards the ease with which the reactions take place and the high caution of adduct. His early work involved the addition of cyclo pentadient to a p-quinone. The product of this reaction was previously questioned from the time of its original preparation in 1893 by Walter Albrecht.…

From the reaction, only 0.654 g (68.34 % yield) of isopentyl acetate was obtained. Different factors could affect the decreasing of the percent yield. During the extractions of the aqueous layer, it was possible that some of the desired product was extracted with the aqueous layer. In addition, some product remained in the drying column when the organic layer was passed through it. Finally, it was possible that final product evaporated because the hot plate was above 80°C.…

Through this experiment we measured how fast a chemical reaction occurs, by changing the degradation rate in Albumin when added to different enzymes. Albumin is a protein found in egg white, which is considered to have important storage and nutritional functions. Albumin has also been used in medicine to treat heavy metal intoxication. We ran Albumin through four different conditions to see which would make the Albumin degrade faster. We predicted that the Albumin would degrade with pepsin the fastest since it is essential for digestion of substances in the stomach.…

Through this Fischer esterification reaction, it was possible to learn about using a Reflux condenser to run a reaction as well as purifying the product through various washes and extractions along with simple distillation. In addition, the product of the experiment was carefully analyzed based upon boiling point, physical characteristics, IR and 1H NMR. The overall objective was to successfully isolate the product of isopentyl acetate and observe the purity of this product.…
