Video Analysis: Responding To Literature

Before actually watching the video “Responding to Literature, “In writing this paper, I thought this was a good quote from the narrator as he said, “I see my role in two ways. One is as a reader, and second responding just like the kids while having a watchful ear on how their reading and thinking are going and how they are growing through the story and learning. [While] I'm helping kids make connections, at the same time I want to be involved in that reading and thinking process myself in a natural way. I don't want to come up with a 'teacher question'... I want to show my own reactions and my own responses as a reader..." The video started to play showing the children getting happily exiting the school bus greeting Mr. Thompson to enter the classroom. I was very impressed with the level of communication and ongoing dialogue that emphasized higher reasoning and thinking ability in the fourth grade class that I observed. Students were engaged in two literary classic, Sounder and Because of Winn-Dixie. The teacher found that taking a role as an active participant in literature discussions can help students learn some of the important components of good discussions: …show more content…
If read properly, a classic tale draws out a feeling of wholeness or oneness, a carefully drawn character or situation evokes a feeling of recognition, and a poem that speaks to the heart engenders of feeling of tranquility” (Gunning 2008, p. 435). The students took out their journals and talked about the book (as to share how a little girl got a dog not supposed to go places). On page 138 of Creating Literacy Instruction for All Students, Gunning recommends involving students in a shared reading by having them participate in predicting words or sentences from a book they enjoy as the discussion is sharing updated pictures that are drawn as the story is being read

It didn’t matter which we used so long as it worked” (McCloud). The author is again reiterating his appreciation for the usage of images and text in literature. Not only that, but he hints toward people’s root of communication through a generalization. McCloud knows that not until after a person has mastered the fundamentals of communication, learned when young through picture books incorporating minimal text, does that person begin to effectively hone and utilize one medium. It takes usage and familiarity of illustrations and words for a person to feel content with just one form of expression.…

Art and literature are the foundation of life. Long before Netflix and social media existed, people used books to entertain themselves. Mason Cooley said “reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are”. Books and reading in general has many benefits like mental stimulation, gaining knowledge and much more.…

Depending on the age group of the audience some illustration books have the ability to teach children the concept of cause and effect. In Where the Wild Things Are, Max’s misbehavior caused his mother to send him off to bed without supper. Children must learn that for an action there is a reaction. This cause and effect learning also helps children build better communication skills. Teachers and parent that read aloud illustration books often stop to talk about the illustrations.…

American teenagers loathe according to Prose because, the reading they are assigned is mediocre, teachers encourage students to see themselves in the books rather than really understand what is being said, some teachers have methods that “narrow the world of experience down to personal” (paragraph 40), this prohibits students from understanding the book as a whole and teaching literature just for values or character makes it much more boring for the student. 10. Yes Prose does offer a solution to this problem. She thinks that the way these books are taught should be changed.…

“While Luhrmann’s film does offer a visually-pleasing adaptation of The Great Gatsby, his overall reading of the novel is too simplistic and misses the more nuanced arguments from the primary text. True, Luhrmann has a wonderful eye for visuals, but it comes at too great a cost for the source material he adapts. Basically, he is too concerned with creating pretty pictures instead of letting the language and story work on their own merit. Luhrmann’s emphasis on creating striking visuals forces him to present the characters as scenery props instead of the complex, thematic devices they are in the novel. For example, Luhrmann’s treatment of the Owl Eyes character serves as the strongest example of his simplistic, surface-level reading of the…

With its use of blatant racial terms and constant presence of racism, the classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Nelle Harper Lee, has recently sparked controversy. The reason behind this controversy is that people tend to feel uncomfortable when reading it. People who disapprove of the book also believe in banning the book from school curriculum. I believe, because of the books ability to teach lessons on racism and open minds to deeper discussions in the classroom, To Kill A Mockingbird should remain on school curriculum.…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…
