Video Analysis Of Volleyball

One of the most beneficial attack strategies in volleyball is the execution of a fast paced, downwards directional spike. A spike is proven to be one of the most effective shots in volleyball due to its force and difficulty for the opposition to return the shot. Through developments in modern technology in sport, biomechanics has become one of the most influential evaluative sources for skill analysis aiding improvements in sporting performance. A video analysis of my volleyball spike will be reflected upon with appropriate decision making to modify and improve my technique. Additionally, recommendations and justifications will be provided to build upon my improvement in successfully executing a volleyball spike.

Force and acceleration are part of Newton’s second law; force = mass x acceleration. The greater the mass of my body the more force and acceleration is required to propel upwards. To begin a volleyball spike from the left hand side of the court the player should position their feet with their non-dominant foot forward. My movement pattern follows through as; right food stride (sub-routine1), left foot stride (sub-routine 2), one-foot jump (sub-routine 3). In comparison, to an elite volleyball player the movement pattern produced should have followed; right foot stride, left foot stride, two-foot jump. The difference in using a one-foot jump compared to that of a two-foot jump effects the acceleration and force I produce. To gain maximum force potential I need to position my feet together on the ground to create a firm base to extend from. The strides build up the acceleration before the jump, however if I lower my centre of gravity to the ground a greater force can be produced. Further to this to improve force momentum the placement of arms is crucial. During the first sub-routine my arms should have been fully extended diagonally arm and then rotated backwards as far as possible still fully extended in sub-routine two. The movement and extension of the arms helps to generate a greater force in lifting the body off the ground as the arms will be bought up during the execution phase. The sequence of arm movements can be remembered as superman, batman and robin hood. The robin hood like movement however is part of the next biomechanics
