Victim Choking Research Paper

Many different items can be the cause of someone choking. When a person, adult or child, is choking they lose all oxygen going to the brain. When they lose all oxygen to their brain, someone needs to administer first aid as soon as possible to decrease chances of any permeant damage. The item for adults that usually causes choking is often food, but in children it is often a small object. Although there is a universal sign for choking, a victim may not always use it. If they do not have their hands round their neck, you can also look for signs such as no talking, skin and lips turning blue, noisy breathing, or loss of consciousness. The person giving the treatment will alternate giving five back blows and five abdominal thrusts until the object is no longer blocking the airway. Not every organization, for example the American Heart Association, teaches back blows. Since some only teach abdominal thrust, it is okay if you only use that method. When performing abdominal thrusts on someone else you will first get behind the victim and wrap your arms around their waist. Next, one will need to make a fist and place it right about the victim’s navel. Lastly, one will grab the fist with the other hand and press into the abdominal using an upward motion. The rescuer will then perform five of these. If the victim is pregnant or obese, the rescuer will move their fist to the base of the sternum to perform the Heimlich maneuver. If one is alone and is helping, they will need to go through one full cycle of back blows and abdominal thrusts before calling 9-1-1; however, if there is someone else the rescuer can have them call 9-1-1. If the victim becomes unconscious, get them to the ground safely and perform CPR and rescue breaths. Before you do breaths, look for the object.
