Veterinary Technician Career Imagine having a job you will never get bored of and a career you are truly passionate about. I love animals and will never get tired of being around them. Nothing would make me happier than a career that consist of helping animals. I want a career that I will be passionate about. When I wake up in the morning I do not want to dread going to work, instead I rather enjoy it. Ever since I was little I’ve always said I wanted to be a Vet of some sort. Some people change their minds as they get older but, I haven’t. This paper will explore the Veterinary Technician job description, requirements, and salary expectation. Study.com explains that a 2 year associate’s degree in a Vet Tech program is required to pursue this career. To go to these programs you need to have either a high school diploma or a GED. Also before going to college you should spend 16-20 hours in an animal hospital to observe (Study). Next, it is important to note where training is available. WATC has a program and training to be a Vet Tech. There’s practical experience you can get from an animal hospital. In addition, the length and cost of training is an important consideration. Colby College states that a 2 year degree in Vet Tech School will cost around $8,000. Colby College is one of the many schools you can go to that has a Vet Tech program (Colby). Finally, this job requires certain traits, talents and interests. From experience I can tell that you will need to have empathy when being a Vet Tech, for when the pets are in critical condition. Social Skills is another trait you will need to have for when dealing with pet owners. Being in the work environment you’ll be in, you’ll need to have organization skills to keep everything clean and running. I think I will be able to get the schooling and training required. I feel it will be a good experience. I now know about how much it will cost and how long it will take to finish my schooling. According to Vet Tech Guide, the lowest income salary of a Vet Tech was $21,390. The highest income salary was $45,710. That average is about $15.20 an hour. The more experience you have the more income you will make. Where you work will have a big impact on how much money you make. If you work at a big company you are more likely to make more money than someone working at a small company. If you work at an animal hospital that’s open 24 hours, you will have higher income. You have to be prepared for bad situations, for example if an animal bites you. You will not get paid any extra for those type of incidents. The more education you have, the more money you will make. Also being a Vet Tech you will get great benefits, most the time being medical and dental care and discounts on your pet’s visits to the Vet (VetTech). I think that the longer I work, the higher my salary will be. I feel I’ll go further in my education to make more money. I now know more about how much money I’ll be making in this career. To sum up, the salary is an important consideration. In conclusion, this paper explored the job description, requirements and salary expectation for becoming a Vet Tech. This career will be a great fit for me because I love animals and helping them. Some of the worse things to expect in this job, I’ve already experienced growing up with animals.
