Vernacular architecture may be described as an architectural style that marks the architecture of a place. It originates rendering the local needs, climatic & geographic factors, socio-economic and socio-cultural background of a place there by making it unique, identified and strong in itself.
India, a country showcasing great cultural and geographical diversity, each part of which is having its own cultural identity and geographic parameters, is a reason for evolution of varied vernacular architectural styles practiced here.
Local architectural designs and construction practices in northerly situated state of India, Himachal Pradesh is full of ethnic values and treasured resources. Architecture here is largely dictated by the region’s extreme terrain and climate. It helps to explore a true combination of two of fundamental materials of built form: wood and stone. In Himachal, woods and stones forms an independent, socially connected and highly artistic expression of folk culture in form of vernacular houses, granaries and temples.
