The Spanish speaking country I picked to research their food and its history is Venezuela. Venezuelans have three main meals: a small breakfast, a large dinner (around noontime), and a very light supper in the evening. Breakfast in Venezuela is a small meal that usually consists of a small pastry or toast served with coffee or fresh juice. Venezuela’s breakfast is all about salt, starch, meat, fruit, and cheese. The largest meal in Venezuela is lunch, which is also when most restaurants offer nice specials on traditional Venezuelan dishes. Like breakfast, dinner in Venezuela can be a lighter meal that might consist of smaller portions of many of the popular Venezuelan foods. Venezelan foods/dishes for dinner include: pabellon, hallaca, empandas, sopa de mondongo, tostones, and so much more. Pabellon is a national dish of Venezuela consisting of rice, black beans and banana covered in stewed and shredded beef. As chocolate grew in popularity in Europe, so did the need to make more. Cocoa plantations soon popped up all over Venezuela. In the beginning, the Indians were used to help grow the cocoa. This is why chocolate is used in many dishes and why Native and European food traditions are popular in this country. Venezuelan foods contain a mixture of Native Indian, European and African influences. The food and its ingredients in Venezuela is very important to the people because it allows them to continue traditions shared with different countries which were passed down from generation to generation. In addition, there are many influences from the Caribbean with ingredients and flavors. This food uses many ingredients including onions, garlic and sweet peppers.
