The main character of The Cask of Amontillado and The Vendetta shared many similarities and differences in their acts of revenge. Montresor, the main character in The Cask of Amontillado and Widow Savarino, the main character in The Vendetta, were obsessed with the fact that they had to get revenge. They both wanted revenge to diminish their feeling of hate upon another person. As a result, they sought out getting revenge for different reasons. First, Montresor and Widow Savarino shared an obsession with getting revenge. In the short story, The Cask of Amontillado, Montresor has an obsession with getting his revenge on Fortunato. Montresor had been irreparably insulted by his acquaintance Fortunato. We learn this when Montresor states, “Fortunato had hurt me a thousand times and I had suffered quietly, but then I learned that he had laughed at my proud name, Montresor, the name of an old honored family. I promised myself that I would make him pay for this- that I would have revenge.” Therefore, Montresor studied Fortunato for the longest time and found out how to use his fondness of wine against him. In the story of the Vendetta, Widow Savarino sought revenge on the behalf of her son, Antoine. Widow Savarino stated her intentions when she said, "Never fear, my …show more content…
In The Cask of Amontillado, Montresor’s ego had been hurt from the insult from Fortunato. Whereas, Widow Savarino’s heart hurt because of her son’s death. Montresor had gotten revenge for himself in comparison to Widow Savarino who had gotten revenge for her son. However, when Montresor had finally trapped Fortunato, he had second thoughts about killing Fortunato. For a moment Montresor felt guilty.
