To model professional nursing practice, a nurse must utilize a set of values, attitudes, and a certain knowledge and skillset. While each individual may have a different set, some commonalities and ability for introspection and awareness must exist to practice as a nurse of excellence.

Wilkinson, Treas, Barnett, and Smith (2016, pp. 1143-1144) define values as “a belief about the worth of something; it serves as a principle or a standard that influences decision making. Values are ideals, beliefs, customs, modes of conduct, qualities, or goals that are highly prized or preferred by individuals, groups, or society.”
