In the nine months I have been a soldier at Valley Forge sickness has claimed many deaths among the soldiers. The quarters were cramped, with twelve soldiers sleeping in small huts that measured 16 by 14 feet. Scarlet fever is ravishing the ranks on a British soldiers, who caught terrible disease from local girls. Befor this war we had already lost Boston and New York and we have a great chance of losing what we have left. In 1777 at Valley Forge was a difficult time because there were a lot of deaths. The Americans were at war with the British. Being far away from your family is something hard to do because you will miss them a lot. “My skin and eyes are almost spoil’d with continual smoke.”(Waldo 151) I try to open my eyes and It starts to burn a lot. There is nothing to protect our eyes from the smoke except for our eyelids. There was too much smoke to open my eyes without tearing up.(Waldo 151) I wanted to keep my eyes closed as long as I can because I was tired of my eyes watering up and stinging. One thousand eight hundred to two thousand five hundred people died because of sickness.(busch 147) One of those people could've been me but luckily i'm still alive. “There were no beds, just straw on the mud floors.” (Roden 141) My back started to hurt after sleeping on the ground for weeks and i’m freezing because the guy right next to me keeps taking the blanket away. “There comes a soldier; his bare feet are seen thro’ his worn shoes, his legs nearly naked from the tatter’d remains of the only pair of stockings... (Waldo 151) My bloody feet hurt from stepping on rocks and twigs I bet my feet are infected, but if I go home I can get them cured by my wife. Staying in a hut that has 12 men and is 16” by 14” is terrible to be in.(Roden 141) I’m so sick of it and rather be with my family. I’m tired of sleeping w/ 12 men they all smell really bad and some of them keep throwing up.(Waldo 151) Because of the men throwing up the hut is permanently stinky. This reason is causing me to not re-enlist because If camping is harder for me than being in that camp will be a disaster. The conditions for everything is horrible which a human from 2016 could not handle
