An assignment in The Giver world basically means the person's job. The people in the community get their assignment when they are twelve and they work that job until they go to the house of the old. On earth one chooses the job that that person wants. Whether it is banking, being a lawyer, doctor, or teacher people chooses their jobs by their own interest. In the community the jobs are assigned. The elders pick and choose who they want to do each job.
