An obvious manifestation of fairness is the criminal and civil justice system where criminals are punished and that wrongs are righted. This legal justice cannot be reliably provided by the private sector because we do not want a market in legal justice such as when the rich are able to get off because they can afford to hire the most talented and expensive lawyers. Justice should not be for sale, it must be able to provide to all people equally as the government is the insurer of democratic values, and does what is right for society as a whole.
