Chapter Nine: Unwholesome Waters
The Deepwater Horizon spilled over four million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. These oil companies learned they are far from being prepared for accidents such as this. Even though, this killed copious amounts of marine life, boats and other water vessels powered by fossil fuels kill more marine life each year with the chemical they leave in the water. Why not stop using oil? Money would be the deciding factor. Organic pollution ingested by the bottom of the food chain is another issue, because it gets passed up the food chain. They are finding high levels of these contaminants in the Bottlenose Dolphins and the dolphin’s first offspring are dying at alarming rates. Mercury is causing similar problems with birds. For example, birds are having less hatchlings. Even, pharmaceuticals are becoming for marine life.

In this chapter I am coming to realize man is kind of evil. How many different ways are we destroying the planet and life on it? They are countless I am starting to see. All the odds are stacked against all life.

Many of these airborne spores come from plants and fungi. Disease epidemics have killed countless marine life around the world. Some of these epidemics happen naturally and others occur because of man. Can these outbreaks be related to stress? After all, stress cause the immune system to be more attractive to disease. One disease that has wiped out seal population a few times is canine distemper. Subsequently, toxic pesticides are breaking down immune systems in marine life. Injured animals are more susceptible and climate changes warming waters do not help matters either. In addition, warming waters cause stress on marine life adding to their

The oil spill will also pollute the ecosystem, altering the overall health of the communities in this ecosystem such as, the rainforest, the mangroves and the tidal flats. Oil spills can affect animals and plants in two ways: form the oil its self or the clean up method. The oil can affect the organisms internally from being absorbed, inhalation or ingestion and externally from irritation of skin and eyes, as it is extremely poisonous and can also suffocate the animals (Response and Restoration, 2016). The oil also flats on top of the water and as it is a dark, thick suntanned, it prevents any sunlight passing through the water which ultimately affects any organisms solely relying on the sun’s energy, such as producers like plankton or sea grass. These producer use sunlight as there source of food through photosynthesis, and without these producers, the consumers in the food chain have nothing to feed off resulting in a decrease in organisms and can prove fatal for…

Seal-world (2016) said, “Researchers believe that the Mediterranean Monk Seal is very shy and doesn’t like to be around humans. This could explain why they have moved from giving birth on land to doing so in the caves under the water. As people continue to move closer and closer into the natural habitat area of these seals it is going to require them to continue further adaptations of their current behaviors.” There are many threats to the survival of the Mediterranean monk seal such as habitat loss or deterioration, deliberate killing by fishermen, accidental entanglement and drowning in fishing gear. Lack of foods and water pollution can also contributed to Mediterranean monk seal mortality (Karamanlidis, A. & Dendrinos, P. 2016).…

Once common, this species has started to decline across much of its range from Queensland to northern NSW; it is most commonly found in Southern Queensland, in places such as Hervey Bay, Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay. Its preferred habitats are tidal rivers and the intertidal flats of estuaries and bays, which are lined with mangroves and have sandy to muddy bottoms. The population decrease has been caused from a combination of habitat degradation, mortality from commercial and recreational fishing, and persecution by shellfish farmers. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has assessed it as Vulnerable. Its range includes some of the most developed areas in Australia, where there is extensive land reclamation, water pollution, and construction of flood mitigation barriers on rivers.…

On March 24, 1989, one of the worst recorded oil spills occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska (Seitel, 2011, p.100). A 987-foot tanker from Exxon Mobil Corp., the Exxon Valdez, spilled 260,000 barrels of oil after the intoxicated ship captain “ran aground on a reef 25 miles southwest of the port of Valdez” (Seitel, 2011, p.101). The oil spill damaged over 1,300 square miles of coast line and caused the death of various sea life, including over 4,000 Alaskan sea otters (Seitel, 2012, p.101). Exxon Mobil’s public relations approach to the crisis received criticism and the mistake affected the company nearly twenty years later.…

In contrast to the earlier published article the second, published in Environmental Science magazine amassed data on the spread of the CH4 plumes. While in ordinary conditions CH4 in the ocean is no cause for alarm, the natural process being able to be safely transported out in the form of CO2. This conversion process is called oxidation.…

The problem is that man’s conquest of the world has itself devastated the world.” (46). Specifically, mankind continues to have a negative effect on marine mammals such as sea otters, and whales. Mankind's negative effect on marine mammals traces back to the time mankind learns to efficiently kill whales in the 1800's since mankind learns to effectively hunt whales; additionally, in the 1900's mankind begins to hunt sea otters in California.…

Hello everyone, I am Charmaine Sultana and welcome and thank you for your interest in my presentation of the effects of plastic debris has on seabirds and how it effects the environment. Brief Concerns Plastic is almost everywhere in our everyday lives. It has become a convenient commodity which is used every day, from storage containers and packaging to plastic bag to take home our goods. Gopal, Phebe, Kumar and Vani (2014) refer to plastic as being inexpensive and overused, hence polluting the environment. United Nations Environment Program [UNEP] also estimate that in 1997 10 percent of plastic that is produced globally enter the ocean, and if this trend continues by 2015 there will be approximately 30 million tons of plastic debris that will find its way into the ocean and pollute the marine environment (as cited in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Debris Program [NOAA], 2014, p.3 )…

The harmful or irritating substances in the environment are called pollutants. There are many different types of Pollution that need to be addressed, and one of them is the issue on water pollution. Contamination of water, typically by foreign matter such as microorganisms, chemicals, industrial or other wastes, or sewage. “Water pollution can be divided into two general types, surface water pollution and groundwater pollution, depending on whether the release is purely on the surface or infiltrates the soil and enters the subsurface” Surface water can be polluted in many different ways and it differs…
