A civilized society is hard to define due to the cause of uniqueness around the world and the diversity between societies. What makes one society civilized may be in contrast to another society 's beliefs, which makes determining a civilized society a difficult task. By definition, a civilized society is one that has been brought to a stage of social, cultural, and moral development and is considered to be more advanced. In the novel, Things Fall Apart, Achebe writes the story to portray the Ibo society as a civilized society in many aspects of life including government, religion, and societal roles. To begin, the Ibo society is civilized in many aspects of its culture, including the government, including the organization of men in the clan.…

Stereotypical From the time civilizations were formed humans have created stereotypes of other groups from an outside perspective. In Chinua Achebe’s novel Things Fall Apart, he humanizes the cultural and traditional based Igbo peoples as he tells the story of a tragic hero named Okonkwo and his family dealing with struggles that Africans faced in the 1890’s. Achebe works to counter the Imperialist stereotypes of African people especially the Igbo by explaining their traditions in depth with the meaning behind them and, showing not only the good side but also the bad. Traditions are passed down through time and often do not stand the the test of time. Throughout the novel the traditions are made very apparent of the Umuofian people, the traditions…

In Umuofia, a city in the novel Things Fall Apart, masculinity is highly regarded as a moral. It’s comparable with words such as courage and power, and with just about any other quality that proves a person in being self-reliant. Actually, it’s considered an insult if a man is called an agbala, a woman. In the novel it says, “no matter how prosperous a man was, if he was unable to rule his women and his children he was not really a man”. There is a sharp contrast between femininity and masculinity – being, women are to be controlled or the followers where as the men were the controllers or leaders.…

Justice can be defined as “the maintenance or administration of what is just by law,” but this does not fully capture the connotation of the term “just.” To fully understand the concept of “just,” one must explore the more ambiguous concepts of culture, religion, and class. In Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, this ambiguity is explored as justice is dissected through the portrayal of conflict between Christian missionary tradition and Tribal legal action. Nwoye’s characterization mirrors this conflict as Nwoye’s personal ideals clash with his family loyalties.…

Achebe states that in her ordinary life she “was a widow with two children” (Achebe 49). It is very interesting that he specifically refers to them in a way that would make the reader think of two very separate people. It shows the way the people of the Ibo culture think about the roles of women. They have normal everyday lives similar to the women of Heart of darkness but there are also specific roles that seem to be specific to women only, which have great importance to their culture. In Ibo culture women have another very important role to play in their gods.…

The book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe focuses on the character Okonkwo, his family and the Ibo tribe. The book Things Fall Apart gives many examples of how Okonkwo has failures and consequences for his failures and then has to live with these consequences and their negative effects. Many examples of this show up throughout the novel such as him killing another tribesman by accidentally shooting off his defective old gun and this has him and his family getting banished from their tribe. Okonkwo is a well-decorated tribesman and warrior who has based his life off of not being a failure and considered weak as his father was before him. Many times in life, as well as literature, people make choices and must live with the consequences…

Every culture has their own ideas of art, literature, customs and other original views according to their culture. These ideas about one’s culture are called universals. People have their own universals but the great part of universals is not having them but also sharing them with other cultures. By sharing universals of one's culture with others it can change people from another culture. When one applies Kwame Anthony Appiah’s idea of Universals in Cosmopolitanism to the character, Nwoye in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Nwoye would change through the sharing of religion of the white men and other ideas.…

While attending St. Agnes, I read about Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and felt a sense of admiration for the way the book was written. The book opens up to the reader and shows how civilization can affect tribal life, this broadened my understanding because I originally thought that becoming civilized was good. But this is not the case for the main protagonist, Okonkwo, who was originally considered nothing but lower than dirt in his tribe because of his father and how he badly manged money; when it come to using it for his own family or for personal use. Okonkwo desired greatly to never become like his father, whom he considered weaker than a woman. After going through hardships, Okonkwo achieves high status in his own tribe but doesn't…

There have been many cases in which money has determined power and status. One such example was during the conversion of African tribes by Christian missionaries. In Chinua Achebe 's book, Things Fall Apart, the reader is told the tale of a village being slowly taken over by the Christian missionaries from England, from the point of view of one of the most revered men in the area, Okonkwo. Okonkwo has always been afraid of being perceived as weak, and this promotes him to fight against the opposing force that wants to ruin their way of life. Although the missionaries came for religious reasons, they also wished to "civilize" the area, so they installed their own government and began to improve the trading system, making much of their power…

“Blindly following ancient customs and traditions doesn’t mean that the dead are alive, but that the living are dead” (Ibn Khaldun). There are the benefits and costs that come along with any religion or custom, but as seen in the novel Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe demonstrates how the consequences of the customs of the Umuofia tribe outweigh the benefits. While many of the tribe members of Umuofia all follow the tribe’s customs, one member in particular who is well respected, lives by the village's customs especially by the rule of masculinity, his name is Okonkwo. As a child, Okonkwo grew up with a father who was seen by the village more as a woman than a man, and all because he showed his emotions and rather play the flute than fight.…
