The University of the Southwest, founded by B. Clarence Evans, is a nondenominational Christian university established in 1962. Unlike most universities, this university offers three-week “Wintermester” classes, both online and in person, in subjects including criminal justice and sociology. The university offers more than 50 majors and has more than 300 undergraduate students in attendance.

Mayville State University, founded in 1889, historically focused on teacher training and education. Interestingly, the university did not offer a non-education degree until 1973, in business administration. The university obtained its current name in 1987 after approval from the North Dakota legislature. The university has roughly 800 students in attendance.
Mayville State University offers associate’s and baccalaureate degrees online through MSU Online. Associate’s degree options include business management and early childhood education, while bachelor’s degree offerings include mathematics and nursing. Bismarck State College

Bismarck State College is one of the largest colleges in the state with over 4,000 students in attendance and more than 20 undergraduate degree programs. The college is notable for its unique renewable energy, nuclear power technology, ethanol training and electric power technology degrees. Among its faculty is Ed Kringstad, who is a wrestling coach and a North Dakota senator.
Some of the associate’s degrees Bismarck State College offers may instead be used to fulfill certification requirements if the student wishes. Some of the associate’s degree programs with this option include electric power technology, power plant technology and instrumentation and control technology.
