This event had a great impact on the country’s forthcoming. One of the causes of the War of 1812 was when Great Britain attempts to restrict our trade. Another cause was that we wanted to expand our territory. During the War of 1812, we were defeated by the British, Native American, and Canadian troops. In August of 1814, they captured and burned our nation’s capital, Washington, DC. The American troops were able to push back British offenses in New York, Baltimore, and New Orleans. The Treaty of Ghent took place on December 24, 1814. British and American representatives gathered in Ghent, Belgium signed it. When the Louisiana Purchase occurred in 1803 the United States bought about 828,000,000 square miles of France territory. The Louisiana Territory stretched from the Mississippi River, Rocky Mountain, Gulf of Mexico and Canadian border. From the land deal approximately 15 states were eventually created. This was considered one of Thomas Jefferson’s greatest achievements as president. The first U.S. fight fought on foreign soil was for the Mexican-American War. This war happened because the United States declined to incorporate it into the union. Many political interests were against having a new slave state. Mexico’s response was that any strive at an annexation would to start a war. The United States won and Mexico lost about 1/3 of their territory. Those included were California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. In Sacramento Valley gold nuggets were found which started the Gold Rush. It was one of the most significant events that shaped our history. This event sparked California population from less than 1,000 to 100,000. All the metal that was extracted was worth about 2 billion dollars.
