The Defense Language Institute (DLI), which includes my unit, the 314th Training Squadron, has an abundance of areas which address demographic, organizational, cognitive, and global diversity. Events are held on a monthly basis to promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) events. The squadron also is involved in monthly demographic diversity (including race, gender, and geographic origin) events with at

The first step is to create the felt need for change, or unfreezing. This can be done by identifying that there is a lack of cooperation, teamwork, and communication between the flights in normal daily operations due to a lack of rapport between the flights. Using Inspirational Motivation, I will create a vision of improved daily mission operations to leadership through building a better rapport among the flights with improved cooperation and communication. I will outline the change of incorporating teamwork workouts/activities that I would make to flight PT time in the Monday staff meeting, and get it approved by the chain of command that day, with the goal of implementing the change on Thursday of the next week, which will set the change. Along with the other flight chiefs, we establish the expectations for all the flights as soon as the change is approved. Reward those that are encouraging the change during the next week’s flight PT session, and reinforce the change with those that are lagging, which will start the process of refreezing. This would be accompanied by a change in the organization of additional duties incorporating primary and alternates for additional duties among the different flights. Follow-up would be essential, and would be completed in 4 weeks after the change is made. The changes made will help daily accountability for students, increase communication between flights, which will foster a better and quicker identification of troubled students to provide a more professional learning

Soldiers in the 35P Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) face many challenges as the progress through their language school and Advanced Individual Training (AIT). They spend six to 18 months focusing all their attention on learning a second language at an accelerated pace and when they have accomplished that daunting task they are sent to Goodfellow Air Force Base to learn the technical aspect of their MOS, usually another three or four months of training. By the time a 35P Soldier arrives at their first duty assignment they have two or more years of service. They have received extensive training in language and technical aspects of their job, but they have received little, if any, tactical training pertaining to their jobs. For those Soldiers assigned to a FORSCOM unit, the lack of tactical training has posed a problem for tactical unit commanders and they demand a fix.…

The 4th Armored Brigade Combat Team (4ABCT) proud tradition of excellence throughout its history took a turn for the worse with its recent deployment and redeployment issues from Afghanistan. An organizational change within 4ABCT is paramount in order to return to its storied heritage of excellence by being a contributing member of the division. In order to complete the change from its current state to a well-respected unit, I would execute a blended version of the seven-step vision process with John Kotter’s eight-stage model to create successful and lasting change. First, I would begin with conducting an initial assessment of the brigade prior to taking command, which is the first step in the seven-step vision process. From this initial…

The town that I grew up in is known for being a very diverse town – the high school that I graduated from back in Clifton, New Jersey, had around 3,300 students enrolled from many different backgrounds, races, nationalities, class, and religions. Walking through the hallway of Clifton High School one would hear many different languages and see many people who look exceptionally different from one another. Because the high school had many students from different backgrounds and wanted the students to be well aware and accepting of this, the school offered various clubs and organizations such as: sports teams, French, Spanish, and Italian clubs, a cheerleading team, and even a pep band. These clubs and organizations allowed many students of different…

Diversity is a key element for a proper learning environment; students must be amongst people of other backgrounds to be exposed to the variation in the real world. In the scientific community, collaboration with others is necessary, and often, they come from an alternate way of life. Working with someone who may be different in many ways has numerous benefits; they may be able to propose ideas that you had not previously considered, or they could inform you of something that has the potential to assist you later in life. Living in a diverse setting not only an educational benefit, but it also aids in the preparation for the real world. We live in an extremely diverse location, with people immigrating from various places around the world.…

The 606th Air Control Unit (606 ACS) was not the perfect model of Air Force diversity, but it did provide and or support many diversity initiatives and opportunities. The unit would host diversity events that complemented wing events throughout the year to promote awareness of the contributions of African-American, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific, and Native American cultures. All of these smaller diversity events culminated in a massive annual diversity day event hosted by the wing, which the unit (CC) always authorized as an alternative duty location. The 606 ACS was also an excellent model of organizational/structural diversity with Airmen from 23 diverse Air Force specialties who work within three directorates: Maintenance, Mission Support, and Operations. In-garrison and deployed immersion/shadow programs promoted awareness of the contributions of all three directorates.…

Labor unions can use a variety of different ways in which to challenge the issues related to racism, sexual-orientation, and women’s rights through the strategies of diversity and self-organizing. Diversity is a crucial factor in allowing women, gays, lesbians, and racial minorities find a common cause and achieve solidarity and political unity. In this manner, it is important to understand the awareness of diversity as a way to achieve a larger coalition of labor union activists that can rely on community unity, political activism, and lobbying the government to achieve legal protections from discrimination in labor unions. Self-organizing provides a way to sidestep patriarchal or racist labor unions bureaucrats that have lost touch with the…

The Vigilance Project Case (Dominick, 2008) is about team conflict because, in reality, the entire project was founded on some sort of conflict. The merger wasn’t really a merger, but more of an acquisition, which instantly creates tensions between the employees of both companies as various roles are either increased or decreased, depending on which company you initially worked for. As subteams were formed and sponsors/leads assigned to each subteam, initially it sounds like a good idea. It flattens out the hierarchy and involves plenty of employees in the decision-making process. However, because of the location of teams, it may have created a larger problem, producing more conflict, as now communication is becoming a bigger-than-initially-thought…

It is important that the message be sent loud and clear to all employees within the organization that the change must be attacked with an extreme sense of urgency. It is also important for the top level of the organization to have a realistic plan in implementing change. Many times top level management overestimates how many big changes they can force early on. They also underestimate how hard it is to drive people out of their comfort zones (Kotter, 1996). In order to achieve this management must create a powerful…
