In order to complete my Unit 5 Journal assignment, I completed the Implicit Association Test. The test was about my religious bias between Islam and Christianity.
The result was that I am a moderate “Automatic preference for Christianity over Islam” when the key to Christianity and Good was assigned (Religion IAT, n.d). This means that I have an implicit preference for Christianity. However, I am skeptical about this test because the program suggests relating good/bad with Christianity/Islam. For example, I had to associate bible with good click the letter “I” and Koran with bad by clicking the letter “E”. And then, in another round, I had associate Koran with good (“I”) and Christianity with bad (“E”). Since I come from a predominantly Catholic country, I do believe that my tendencies are towards that religion. However, I am not a religious person and I don’t practice Catholicism actively. My only knowledge about Islam is from the news and it is associated with extreme acts of violence. Moreover, in my personal opinion, I do believe that people who practice Islam are very intolerant towards other people’s beliefs. Once I was in an art fair and in one of the booths there was a Hispanic person who had a Jesus’ figurine on the table. I held the figurine in my hand and I was complementing the owner when suddenly another man (he identified himself that he practiced Islam) questioned the representation of the figure and why we worship it. His voice was not amicable and sounded as if we were completely on the wrong path by believing in the figurine. I tried to explain to him that we don’t actually worship the statue, but to Jesus itself. I didn’t feel offended by his words, but I got the impression that people who practice Islam are
